Tim Sears Jr. And Jason Barney Pocket ‘Wings And Warriors’ Gold
FULTON, NY – July 5, 2014 (By Dave Medler) – When the concept was born for the ‘Wings & Warriors’ Series for the 2014 season featuring Big Block Modifieds and Sprint Cars at the Brewerton and Fulton Speedway, what took place Saturday night at the Fulton Speedway was exactly what they had in mind.
In the Tracey Road Equipment DIRTcar Modifieds, Tim Sears Jr. picked up the win after an intense three-car battle that also included Chris Hile and Tom Sears Jr. Not to be out done the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints had a wild three-car battle that involved Larry Wight, Matt Tanner and had lapped traffic play a part with local favorite Jason Barney taking the victory.
Other winners on NAPA Auto Parts night were, Ron Davis III, SUNY Canton Sportsman – AJ Kingsley, NAPA Late Models and Brenton Joy, E&V Energy Novice Sportsman.
Joe August Jr. would lead the opening two-laps of the 35-Lap Big Block Modified feature before Chris Hile would blast around August using the top to be scored the new leader on lap-three.
With ten-laps complete, Hile was on rails as he pulled out to a full straightaway lead. Tim Sears Jr. and Tom Sears Jr. raced for second and third as they tried to keep Hile within sight.
On Lap-15, Tim and Tom Sears reeled in Hile as they were only five car lengths back. Behind the top-three, Chad Phelps and August ran in the top-five.
With 10-Laps to go, Tom Sears had worked his way by Tim Sears and reeled in Hile as they ran bumper-to-bumper into turn one when disaster almost struck. Hile and Sears made contact that launched Sears’s front end in the air slamming back down to the track surface. Sears would continue, but was obvious there was damage as he started to drop back through the field.
Over the next few laps Hile still led but now had Tim Sears all over him trying to find a way by. On lap-twenty-nine Sears bolted under Hile to be scored the new leader.
Over the remaining laps it was all Tim Sears Jr. as he cruised under the checkers for his second Fulton win this year. Chris Hile, Billy Decker, Chad Phelps and Rob Bellinger finished second through fifth. Ryan Phelps, Larry Wight, Jimmy Phelps, Joe August Jr. and Chris Mackey completed the top-ten.
“The track was real racy, you could race all over it,” said an elated Tim Sears Jr. parking his Mullen Industrial Handling/ Pit Stop Convenience Stores/ A&J Enterprises/ FX Caprara/ LJL Kevlar Racing Engines/No.83x/ in victory lane.
“After the luck we had this weekend, its been a rough weekend. They (crew) have been working on this thing the last two days just non-stop. I got to thank my dad, Johnny, the guys in the shop for getting the car back together for today.”
Larry Wight would bolt out to a half-a-straightaway lead to start the 25-Lap Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprint feature till a yellow on Lap-4 that involved contact between Charlie Donk and Danny Varin. Donk would get towed to the pits with front end damage.
With ten-laps complete Wight would open a lead of over a half-a-straight away running the top of the speedway. Behind Wight, Steve Poirier and Jason Barney battled side-by-side for second and third with Matt Tanner and Chuck Hebing showing in the top-five.
A quick yellow would fly on lap-11 erasing Wight’s lead. On the restart Wight would again drive away from the pack.
With ten-laps to go Wight was still on rails running the top as he had a half-a-straightaway lead. Barney, Tanner and Poirier were in a high speed battle for second through fifth.
From Lap-15 to Lap-20 Barney was able to use traffic to reel in Wight in an exciting race of cat and mouse in and out of back-markers. On Lap-21 Barney took advantage of traffic as he was able to drive under and by Wight for the lead.
Just when it looked like Barney would drive away for the win, Matt Tanner had other ideas. It all came down to the final lap as Tanner threw everything he had at Barney for the win. Barney didn’t flinch as he picked up the popular narrow win. Matt Tanner, Steve Poirier, Jessica Zemken and Paul Kinney finished second through fifth. Larry Wight finished third but was put tail for a tire infraction.
In the 25-Lap SUNY Canton Sportsman feature Chris Hile would take the lead from Todd Root on lap-5 after hounding Root using the top of the speedway.
While Hulsizer was leading Ronnie Davis III was reeling in Hulsizer by using the bottom of the speedway when a caution flag would fly on Lap-10 when Bradon Hagen spun collecting Jason Occhino, Rocco Leone, Josh Blackwell and Taylor Lamb.
On the restart Davis found the bite he needed exiting turn-four to be scored the new leader of the race.
With 10-Laps to go Davis had around a ten-car length lead while behind him a great race for second through fifth was going on between Jason Parkhurst, Brandon Ford, Hulsizer and Jim Spano.
When the final laps clicked off Davis kept increasing his lead winning by over a straightaway at the checkers. Brandon Ford grabbed second by inches over Jason Parkhurst. Beth Schneider came home fourth from the consi with early leader Chris Hulsizer finishing fifth.
AJ Kingsley grabbed the lead on the opening lap of the 20-Lap NAPA Late Model Feature and was the dominate car the entire distance. Even with a late yellow that put point’s leader Tim Sears Jr. on Kingsley back bumper it made no difference as nobody was getting by Kingsley on Saturday. Tim Sears Jr., Sean Beardsley, Alan Fink and Dave Talbot chased kingsley across the line.
Brenton Joy won his third feature of the year in the 15-Lap E&V Energy Novice Sportsman. Joy took the lead on Lap-11 when leader Brett Draper spun. Once out front Joy out ran he field to the checkers. With his third win Brenton Joy has to move up to the SUNY Canton Sportsman.
Coming this Saturday, July 12 note a 6:45 start time with gates opening at 5:00 as Safety-Kleen presents a full night of exciting racing. On the race card will be the Tracey Road Equipment DIRTcar Modifieds/ SUNY Canton Sportsman/ NAPA Late Models/ E&V Energy Novice Sportsman/ A-Verdi Storage Containers 305 Sprints/ Hilton’s Automotive Four Cylinders and Pro Race Cars Mod Lites.
